Everyone – the whole community – is welcome Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. The custom In Europe during the Medieval period was that after people confessed their sins and were forgiven (shriven) they celebrated by eating rich foods containing eggs, milk and sugar, since they would be fasting during Lent (beginning the very next day). In England pancake relay races were common, but we will not be having those:)
and since Ash Wednesday always follows Shrove Tuesday, and you may be looking for this information too, here it is:
Ash Wednesday Service
There will be an Ash Wednesday service on February 14 at 7:00 PM. Please join us as we gather in a darkened sanctuary to pray, listen to scripture, and sing chants from the Taize community in France.
We then form a circle at the front of the church to burn dried palms from last year’s Palm Sunday service and use the ashes to mark each other’s foreheads, saying, “From dust you are and to dust you shall return” as acknowledgement of our mortality.
We then leave in silence, our first step into Lent, a season of quiet contemplation.
