Sunday June 7th we will have a special “Cowboy Church” service for morning worship at 9:30 am!!! Wear blue jeans, and cowboy boots or hats if you have them. Unfortunately, we don’t have a hitching post, so leave your horse at home. Kevin Balawick will read “A Cowboy’s Prayer” written in 1906 by Charles Badger Clark. Special music on guitar will be “I’m Following Jesus, One Step at a Time” featuring Scott Randall. The Sermon will explain the Holy Trinity in pioneer terms from Wes Seelig’s book “Western Theology.” Communion – called “The Lord’s Chuckwagon” for that day – will ask folks to come forward, with the “bread” being “cornbread.” Our worship will end with singing “Happy Trails to You.” Many thanks to Bill & Norma Coli for the loan of a saddle for up front, and to Annie Rancourt for the loan of a bridle.
Growing in number over the last 20 years, Cowboy Churches are mostly found out West, often in big tents or warehouse style buildings. There are also special church services in conjunction with rodeos and other “Western” events. Cowboy church tends to be more informal, with lots of singing and story-telling. Cowboy Church worship is “Low church” (not high church like Episcopal), without much structure or liturgy, and the use of common everyday language instead of ecclesiastical terms and ritualized motions (like kneeling and rising at certain points).
